Walk with MS, Ivanhoe Broadcast News:"Nearly 300,000 people in the United States have multiple sclerosis. One of the most common effects of the condition is that walking becomes difficult. Now, doctors hope a new drug will help improve walking and quality of life. A simple walk across the room is not so simple for David Kolodny. "If you can imagine what it's like to walk on stilts or something like that," he says. "It's just real awkward and very unbalancing."

Walking Unaided, My Multiple Sclerosis:"The medical establishment uses how far I can walk unaided as an indication of the progression of my disease. So I suppose I should report on this. If I'm having an ok day, if I've slept the night before, if I'm not having an exacerbation, and if Jupiter is properly aligned with Mars, I can walk unaided: from the bedroom to the kitchen to make coffee from the kitchen to the living room out to the front yard and clean the snow off my wife's car going downstairs into the basement is not easy, but I can do it."

Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Information for Children, Children's Hope for Understanding Multiple Sclerosis (CHUMS):"CHUMS is the only multiple sclerosis based non-profit organization in the United States that focuses on supporting a child's need to understand the disease. Life-changing diseases, like MS, can be a scary and difficult thing to explain to a child - especially if you don't really understand it yourself. CHUMS believes that the adult figure in the child's life is his/her best hope for understanding multiple sclerosis so some practical ways to begin talking about this complicated disease are provided throughout the site - particularly in the CHUMS Activities section."

Multiple sclerosis (MS), Neurology, Healthcommunities.com sites :"Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, progressive, degenerative disorder that affects nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord. A fatty substance (called myelin) surrounds and insulates nerve fibers and facilitates the conduction of nerve impulse transmissions. MS is characterized by intermittent damage to myelin (called demyelination) caused by the destruction of specialized cells (oligodendrocytes) that form the substance. Demyelination causes scarring and hardening (sclerosis) of nerve fibers usually in the spinal cord, brain stem, and optic nerves, which slows nerve impulses and results in weakness, numbness, pain, and vision loss."

Multiple sclerosis, WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW, Healthsquare.com:"Multiple sclerosis (skler-OH-sus), also called "MS," is a long-term disease of the nervous system. It attacks the fibers in the brain and spinal cord that transmit nerve impulses. These fibers are covered with myelin, a fatty material that surrounds and protects them just as insulation protects electrical wires. If this myelin sheathing is damaged or destroyed---as it is in MS---nerve messages to and from the brain are disrupted. Symptoms of MS begin slowly and affect each person differently. The disease also has quiet and active periods. When you have few or no symptoms, you are said to be in remission---a period that may last months or years. A relapse occurs when the symptoms return. The disease is more common in white people than in those of other races, and it affects more women than men. It usually starts between the ages of 20 and 40. It is also more common in cold climates."

Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Articles, Medicinenet.com:"Multiple sclerosis (MS) was first described in Holland by a 14th century physician. It is a disease in which the nerves of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) degenerate. Myelin, which provides a covering or insulation for nerves, improves the conduction of impulses along the nerves and also is important for maintaining the health of the nerves. In MS, inflammation causes the myelin to degenerate and eventually disappear. Consequently, the electrical impulses that travel along the nerves decelerate. Late in the disease, the nerves themselves are damaged. As more and more nerves are affected, a patient experiences a progressive interference with functions that are controlled by the nervous system such as vision, speech, walking, writing, and memory."

Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Latest News, MEDLINE Plus :"LONDON (Reuters) - The biggest study of the use of cannabis to relieve symptoms of multiple sclerosis, or MS, produced mixed results, but doctors said there is enough evidence to warrant licensing the treatment for the illness.
Although there was no objective evidence that cannabis relieved muscle spasms, caused by the disease, patients reported some improvements in pain, rigidity and mobility.
There were also fewer relapses in multiple sclerosis patients given cannabis capsules or extract than in sufferers taking a placebo."

Multiple Sclerosis (MS), General Information, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke :"Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a life-long chronic disease diagnosed primarily in young adults. During an MS attack, inflammation occurs in areas of the white matter of the central nervous system (nerve fibers that are the site of MS lesions) in random patches called plaques. This process is followed by destruction of myelin, which insulates nerve cell fibers in the brain and spinal cord. Myelin facilitates the smooth, high-speed transmission of electrochemical messages between the brain, the spinal cord, and the rest of the body."

Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Articles, PersonalMD.com:"The cause of multiple sclerosis is still unknown. For reasons not yet understood, random areas of the fatty substance (myelin) that covers nerve fibers is lost. The myelin normally insulates entire nerve fibers. It helps nerve messages to be properly conducted to and from the brain. The areas of myelin that are lost are called plaques. The symptoms of multiple sclerosis depend on where these plaques are in the central nervous system."

Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Natural Remedies, WholehealthMD.com :"Multiple sclerosis can seem like the cruelest disease. We've all heard of cases where a young adult, once in the bloom of health, becomes disabled and confined to a wheelchair. And while it's true that MS attacks healthy young people, fortunately very few cases lead to rapid disability. By far the common MS "story" is one of flare-ups followed by very long disease-free periods, so that disability, if it does occur at all, may not happen for decades."
